In line with the celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month and National Disability Protection and Rehabilitation (NDPR) week this July, the People’s Initiative for Learning and Community Development (PILCD), launched its Inclusive Information Education Communication (IEC) materials last July 4 and 6 in Catbalogan and Calbayog in Samar.
The inclusive IEC materials include audio and video materials on Inclusive Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CBDRRM) and information on different hazards and safety tips. These materials are in Waray language.
These materials form part of PILCD’s project on Disability Inclusion in Disaster Preparedness and Response supported by Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) and Aktion Deutchsland Hilft (ADH). The development of these materials involved the active participation of the projects participants and partners from the local government units, persons with disabilities, local civil society organizations and the academe.
The launching of materials in Catbalogan was held at the Samar State University (SSU) attended by representatives from the Office of the City Mayor, City Social Welfare and Development Office, Department of Education Catbalogan City Division, Samar State University, Barangay Officials and people’s organizations from PILCD’s project site and the Catbalogan Federation of Persons with Disability.
Dr. Marilyn Cardoso, President of the Samar State University acknowledge the importance of the project in raising awareness for disaster preparedness: “This activity is very important as we are making sure that the LGUs and the communities are aware and prepared on how to handle the persons with disability in case of emergencies or disaster, at the same time it promotes DRRM awareness for all sector”.
The Federation of Persons with Disability, acknowledged the importance of such materials to their sector and expressed their gratitude to PILCD and its partner.
The launching in Calbayog was attended by representatives from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), City Drug Abuse Protection and Rehabilitation (CDAPRO), Christ the King College, North West Samar State University, Department of Education Calbayog City Division, Local DRRM Officers and Calbayog City Federation of Persons with Disability.
Mr. Demetrio Dimaranan, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in Calbayog stated that the materials will be a big help in carrying out their mandate: “PILCD’s project made our lives and work easy because they helped us in this Disaster Preparedness work, thank you was not enough to express our gratitude and we will promise that these materials will be utilized properly”.
Both heads of the City Social Welfare and Development Office headed by Ms. Betty Jane Arnejo in Calbayog and Ms. Nida Aroza in Catbalogan expressed the importance of these materials and that these will be shared and disseminated during our roll-out activities in the different barangay.
